The Primeurs Week 2023 has come to an end! As a real highlight for all the Bordeaux winemakers, it took place from the 24th to the Friday 28th of April. The En Primeurs Campaign is an exclusive sale for La place de Bordeaux: it allows wine traders to pre-order wines of the last vintage that are still in barrels. The shipping will take place two years after the bottling of the wine. This year, the focus was on the vintage 2022, one of the greatest ever produced in Bordeaux!
At Château de Ferrand Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, the first tastings took place from the 5th of April. In total, we welcomed more than 250 people from all around the world – from the USA to Taiwan, Islande or Abu Dhabi. Our guests were able to enjoy the visit of the property, the Primeur tasting and a diner in the Orangery of the Château.
An exciting week full of meetings and discussions around this great vintage!
Vintage 2022 in few words…
The 2022 vintage was globally marked by good climatic conditions. Beginning of April, two particularly intense episodes of frost threatened the region but thanks to its elevated position, the Ferrand vineyard was spared. During the very hot and dry summer, the Ferrand vineyards were not significantly affected by water stress. Indeed, the plant was suitably supplied with water thanks to Ferrand’s unique clay-limestone terroir, that absorbed the rain water in the winter. The vines demonstrated their resilience, the result of soil tilling and leaf canopee management work performed throughout the year.
Harvesting for the 2022 vintage began on the 5th of September (first time in the property’s history!) and was completed on the 5th of October, making a total of 13 harvest days spread out over the course of a month. Extraordinary weather conditions, with warm days and cool nights, allowed us to take our time with the harvests in order to obtain optimum maturity.
Château de Ferrand 2022 blend is 66% Merlot and 34% Cabernet Franc. It is a dynamic, expressive wine with a very good balance: a faithful reflection of the limestone terroir of Château de Ferrand. 2022 marks the second year of Château de Ferrand’s organic conversion.

From the 5th April to the 31st of August, the musée de la Création Franche is unveiling a selection of works from its collections in the barrel cellar of Château de Ferrand.
“L’Humble Bic” includes 62 works created by 24 artists, which all have one thing in common: the use of ballpoint pen. A tool of simplicity, inexpensive and democratic, it is for the authors of art brut an “easy”, immediate medium, in keeping with the spontaneity of this form of expression.
Thanks to the personal and industrial history of its owners, Château de Ferrand has recently opened up to a new artistic and cultural dimension, which has given rise to this unique exhibition. The Bich family has long been aware of the way in which artists and creators of all kinds have seized upon this very simple tool, the BIC® Cristal®, and has begun to build a collection of contemporary art, alongside the BIC company.
When Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët discovered that the Musée de la Création Franche had a collection of one thousand two hundred works created with a biro, it seemed obvious: when the museum was closed for renovation and expansion, it was only natural that Château de Ferrand offered to display a small part of the museum’s collection in the cellars.
Opened in 1989 in Bègles, the Musée de la Création Franche explores the territories of art brut, popular art and naive art. It houses a rich collection of 20,000 works, the first public collection in history dedicated to outsider art and related fields in France. It has just been awarded the title of “Musée de France”.
Looking for a family-friendly activity around Bordeaux? Until August 31st , discover this exceptional exhibition in the heart of the Saint-Emilion vineyard. For the youngest visitors, games booklets are available as a fun way to explore the exhibition, aged 3-5 years and 6-10 years.
EXHIBITION OPENS tuesday to sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
Few weeks ago, Château de Ferrand Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé had the pleasure of welcoming writers and journalists for a literary retreat among the vines. Curated in collaboration with Wine Lister, this event was a wonderful opportunity to bring together personalities from different spheres of wine writing – print media, digital press, tourism publications – united by a love of wine and words.
The first edition gathered Georgina Hindle (Decanter), Charlie Geogehan (Berry Brothers), Hannah Crosbie (Influenceur, The Dalston Wine Club), Lisse Garnett (Wine Anorak/The Spectator), Wendy Narby (Insider Tasting), Judy O’Kane (World of Fine Wine, Irish Times), Aaron Rowlands (Cult Wines), Red Stevens (Honest Grapes) and Sophie Thorpe (Fine+Rare).
A beautiful and meaningful project for Château de Ferrand, a property that has always been inextricably linked to the art of writing. Indeed, the estate’s original owner, the nobleman and politician Élie de Bétoulaud, was well-known locally for his poetry and his links to the 17th-century Parisian literary set known as the précieuses. The estate’s current owners are the heirs of Baron Bich, founder of the BIC Group – responsible for manufacturing one of the most trusted implements in a writer’s toolkit.
Friday, October 7th– Beginning of the Writers Retreat
Once arrived at Château de Ferrand, writers and journalists were able to get to know each other over a cocktail, followed by a dinner in the Orangery. The evening was highlighted by an horizontal tasting of the 2018 vintage: six well-known wines from France, Italy or even Australia, all tasted blind. A nice moment of sharing aroung wine!
Saturday, October 8th – Focusing on Château de Ferran and Cabernet Franc
Saturday morning started with a discussion session led by Georgina Hindle and Charlie Geoghegan, about the challenges and issues of wine writing today. Then followed a tour of the property and the vineyard, a vertical tasting of Château de Ferrand Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé (vintages 2016 to 2020), before heading to the park for a lunch under the 300 hundred years oaks.
In the afternoon, guests were invited to the BIC tasting room for a masterclass onCabernet Franc led by consultant oenologist Axel Marchal, who has been working with Château de Ferrand for several years. A great opportunity to taste different batches of Cabernets Francs, in order to better understand the subtleties of this promising grape variety. Relatively to this, guests were able to enjoy a gastronomic dinner in the dining room paired with various French famous wines, recognized for the quality of their Cabernets Francs.
Sunday, October 9th – Visiting Saint-Emilion
On Sunday morning, guests discovered the medieval city of Saint-Emilion, its narrow streets, the unique architecture but and the emblematic wine properties. A key stop to end this inspiring weekend in the Bordeaux region!
Château de Ferrand is pleased to announce the En Primeurs release of its 2021 vintage.
few words on the 2021 vintage…
Every vintage is a surprise – sometimes a pleasant one, other times less so, but always keeping winemakers on their toes.
The 2021 vintage was no exception: it threw up challenges to be overcome throughout the seasons, each with contrasting weather. Vigilance, responsiveness and adaptation were the watchwords of the year, which took determination and passion to navigate.
First vintage undergoing the transition to organic farming, it represents a real turning point for Ferrand in its quest for more sustainable viticulture. With a higher proportion of Cabernet Franc, Château de Ferrand 2021 is marked by freshness, radiance, vibrancy and beautiful balance. Here are some scores given by French and international wine critics on our 2021 vintage:
YVES BECK : 93-94/100
«Le bouquet de Ferrand se révèle avec délicatesse au travers de subtiles notes de myrtilles et de mûres suivies d’une touche d’épices douces. En bouche le vin est légèrement crémeux. Ses tannins sont onctueux et veloutés et assurent une bonne assise. La structure acide agit en coulisse et assure de la fraîcheur. L’ensemble doit être encore bien emballé ; l’élevage s’en chargera ! »
Yves Beck – May 2022
decanter : 90/100
« Grippy and textured from the get-go, with mouthwatering acidity, the focus on sleek but velvety, textured tannins with the blackcurrant pastille, black cherry and raspberry fruit taking a beat and settling in the background. Minerality is on show in the slate and crushed stone flavours, with some caramel and toast notes on the finish. Good potential.»
Georgie Hindle – May 2022
Alexandre ma : 93-95/100
Jane Anson : 92/100
«Love the slightly tart but deeply textured feel that captures the clarity and austerity of limestone but widens out to a creamy mid palate with blackberries, redcurrants and spiced cloves. Will soften further over ageing, and has all the elements in place to be a thoroughly enjoyable wine for drinking within five to six years, and will last for a further decade from there. Mandarin notes on the finish.(…)»
Jane Anson – May 2022
MArkus del Monego : 94/100
« Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Well structured nose with ripe fruit, sloe, blackberries, hints of wild strawberries, violets, fine toasting and hints of gingerbread spices. On the palate well structured and balanced with convincing length, juicy fruit, discreet spiciness and pleasant mouthfeel, a promising wine »
Markus del Monego – May 2022
RVI : 95/100
« 1er millésime en cours de conversion bio – la première vendange certifiée bio est attendue pour 2024. Une couleur rubis intense, un nez séduisant, le vin est équilibré, d’une grande précision, sur le fruit, un vrai charmeur ! »
Vladimir Kauffmann – May 2022
